Swine Flu Pandemic

Dear netters,

The fear of a swine flu pandemic has certainly rattled many a health care provider. Apart from a quicker notification system and a speedier set up for port-of-entry screening of patients with flu-like symptoms, nothing much has changed. The third world is still the one first, and most affected. Air travel hasn't been curtailed, not that it is wise to do so, and travellers remain unimpeded. Governments still try to underestimate actual numbers for fear of negative repercussions to the tourism industry. Is there a need to re-invent the wheel here of should it be same old, same old........

Re: Swine Flu Pandemic

The term Swine Flu is incorrect since no swine has yet been reported to be stricken by the disease according to a FAO statement. Instead up to today, only human to human transmission has been reported. Hence the correct name should be North American or Mexican Flu.

Swine Flu 2009 Outbreak in US and Mexico
Swine Influenza (swine flu) is a respiratory disease of pigs.  It is caused by type A influenza viruses.  People do not normally get swine flu, however human infections can. Swine flu viruses have been reported to spread from person-to-person. In late March and early April 2009, cases of human infection with swine influenza A (H1N1) viruses were first reported in Southern California and near San Antonio, Texas and later in the other states.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is actively tracking the recent emergence of human cases of swine influenza A (H1N1) virus infection.
